Why Ball Pythons Deserve Their Reputation
Genuinely docile animals that rarely bite without provocation, stay manageable in size, and thrive in a relatively straightforward enclosure setup. When scared, they curl into a tight ball rather than striking. With a lifespan of 20-30 years, they're a serious long-term companion.
Temperature Setup
- Warm side surface: 88-92°F (heat mat on a thermostat)
- Ambient air: 78-80°F throughout
- Cool side: no lower than 76°F
- Never use heat mats without a thermostat
Humidity
Ball pythons require minimum 60% relative humidity, with 70-80% being better — especially during shed. Cypress mulch and coconut fiber hold humidity well. Check with a digital hygrometer.
Hides Are Non-Negotiable
Provide two snug hides — one on the warm side, one on the cool side. The hides should be tight enough that the snake's body touches the sides when inside. An oversized hide provides no security. Minimum enclosure for an adult: 4 feet by 2 feet by 1 foot.
