Sugar Glider Housing: The Cage Setup That Lets Them Thrive
Why Height Is the Priority
Sugar gliders need real vertical space to climb, jump, and move naturally. The minimum cage size for a pair is 24 inches wide by 24 inches deep by 36 inches tall. Bigger is better — many dedicated owners use cages that are 5 or 6 feet tall.
Bar Spacing: A Critical Safety Detail
Bar spacing must be no wider than half an inch. Wider spacing means a glider can wedge into the bars, injure its limbs, or escape entirely.
What to Put Inside
- Sleeping pouches — at least two large fleece pouches big enough for both animals
- Ropes and branches — thick rope spirals, wooden perches, and natural branches
- Wooden hides and ledges — surfaces at varying heights
- No wire mesh floors — solid or cloth flooring only
Placement in the Home
Choose a room that stays consistently between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid direct sunlight, drafts, and high-traffic areas during the day when gliders are sleeping.
