Aquatic Turtle Diet: Pellets, Feeder Fish, and the Vegetables They Actually Need
Quality Pellets as Foundation
A high-quality aquatic turtle pellet should make up 50-60% of your turtle's diet. Look for pellets where whole fish or shrimp appear as the first ingredient. Reputable brands: Mazuri, Hikari, Zoo Med. Soak pellets briefly before feeding to prevent expansion inside the stomach.
Leafy Greens
- Romaine lettuce — readily accepted, low oxalate
- Dandelion greens — excellent calcium content
- Collard greens and kale — nutrient-dense, offer in rotation
- Aquatic plants — anacharis, hornwort, water hyacinth for grazing enrichment
Feeder Fish: Enrichment, Not a Staple
Live feeder fish engage hunting behavior but should be offered occasionally — not as a dietary base. Avoid goldfish — they contain thiaminase, which breaks down vitamin B1 with regular feeding. Rosy reds and guppies are reasonable choices.
Calcium Supplementation
A calcium block in the water gives turtles the ability to supplement themselves as needed. Feed juveniles daily and adults every other day. Remove uneaten food promptly to protect water quality.
