Red-Eared Slider Care

Why Most Sliders Are Kept Wrong

A hatchling that fits in your palm will become a 10-12 inch adult needing a serious setup. More sliders are surrendered or killed by inadequate housing than by any other cause.

Tank Size

A single adult red-eared slider needs a minimum 75 gallons of water. Common rule: 10 gallons per inch of shell length. Overcrowded sliders show increased aggression, faster water fouling, and chronic stress.

Filtration

A filter rated for double or triple your actual tank volume is the minimum standard. Canister filters like the Fluval FX series are the practical choice. Internal or hang-on-back filters will be overwhelmed within days by a healthy slider.

Temperature and UVB

  • Water temperature: 75-80°F with a submersible heater with a guard
  • Basking area air temperature: 85-90°F
  • T5 HO 5.0 or 10.0 UVB positioned within 12 inches of basking surface

Sliders that cannot fully dry out and warm up develop shell rot, respiratory infections, and immune suppression. Every setup needs a completely dry, stable basking platform.
