Bearded Dragon Care for Beginners: Lighting, Diet, and the Setup That Sets Them Up
Lighting Is Non-Negotiable
Bearded dragons need a T5 HO 10.0 UVB tube and a basking spot of 110-120°F. Without UVB, metabolic bone disease develops rapidly. Run lights 12-14 hours in summer, 10-12 in winter. The cool end should sit around 80-85°F. A full-grown beardie needs a minimum 4x2x2-foot enclosure.
Diet by Age
Juveniles eat 70% insects and 30% greens. Adults flip that ratio: mostly leafy greens with insects 3-4 times a week. Dust every insect feeding with calcium powder.
Temperament
Beardies are among the friendliest reptiles in the hobby. They arm-wave, beard-puff, and mouth-gape when they want space. Learn the signals and you'll build genuine trust.
