Why Chinese Water Dragons Turn Brown (And How to Fix It)
Stress Is the Number One Cause
A healthy Chinese water dragon is vivid green. When that color fades toward brown or dull olive, it's a signal worth taking seriously. In most cases the cause is chronic psychological stress — identifiable and correctable.
The Reflection Problem
In glass enclosures, water dragons frequently see their own reflection and respond to it as a rival. The dragon spends hours every day in defensive posturing and nose-rubbing. Switch to a front-opening enclosure with a mesh or screen front. Color improvement is usually visible within days. If you can't immediately replace the enclosure, cover three sides with a background to break the reflection.
Other Factors to Check
- Add dense planting at multiple heights to provide visual cover
- Verify basking spot reaches 90-95°F
- Confirm UVB bulb is functional and within replacement window
- Give the animal time — color recovery after chronic stress takes days to weeks
