Degu Housing and Enrichment: What These Smart Rodents Really Need
Cage Size
A minimum cage size of 24 inches wide by 24 inches deep by 24 inches tall is a starting point for a pair. Multi-level metal bar cages designed for ferrets or chinchillas often work well. Bar spacing should be no wider than half an inch.
The Chewing Requirement
Degus have continuously growing teeth that need regular wear. Provide a consistent supply of safe wooden items: apple wood, willow, hazel, and kiln-dried pine. A degu that cannot chew properly will develop dental overgrowth.
Wheels: Solid Surface, Right Size
A solid-surface wheel with a diameter of 10 to 12 inches is appropriate for degus. Avoid wire or mesh wheels entirely.
Group Housing and Social Enrichment
Housing degus in pairs or small groups is itself one of the most important forms of enrichment. You will observe them grooming each other, playing, vocalizing, and sleeping in contact. Rotate cage furniture and hide dried herbs in the bedding for foraging.
