Dust Baths: How and How Often
Use chinchilla dust and pour enough into a wide, open-topped container for the degu to roll around in fully. Offer the bath 2 to 3 times per week and allow 15 to 20 minutes of access before removing it. Do not leave the dust bath in the enclosure permanently.
Reading Their Teeth
Healthy degu teeth have an orange tint — this is normal pigmentation and a sign of good health. If you notice white or unusually pale teeth, that warrants attention. A degu that is losing weight, dropping food, or reluctant to eat may have a dental issue requiring professional evaluation.
Nail Trimming
Check nails monthly and trim if they are curling or visibly long. Use small animal nail clippers and clip only the clear tip, carefully avoiding the pink quick. If uncertain, have an exotic vet demonstrate the process the first time.
When to See a Vet
Schedule annual wellness exams with an exotic animal vet familiar with degus. Seek attention promptly for weight loss, changes in eating or drinking, eye or nasal discharge, or unusual lumps.
