Green Iguana Care

Not a Beginner Reptile

Green iguanas grow to 5-6 feet, require a permanent large setup (8x4x6 ideal for adults), are strict herbivores, have powerful claws and tails, and require years of daily interaction to tame properly. They can live 15-20 years. Plan for the adult from day one.

The Physical Reality

Adult iguanas have sharp claws designed for gripping tree bark and a powerful tail capable of delivering significant defensive strikes. A frightened or defensive iguana is not a trivial animal to handle. This is not a reason to avoid them — but it is a reason to commit to the years of daily socialization required to have a genuinely tame animal.

Taming Takes Years

Trust is not given — it is earned through consistent, calm, daily interaction over an extended period. A well-socialized iguana that has been handled correctly since hatchling age becomes a calm, interactive animal.
