Feeding Leopard Geckos: Crickets, Mealworms, and Getting Supplementation Right
Strict Insectivores
Leopard geckos eat only insects — no fruits, no vegetables. They need to hunt, and they need variety. Staples: crickets (widely available, excellent when gut-loaded) and dubia roaches (high protein, outstanding nutritional profile). Mealworms are fine for variety in adults but not as the sole feeder. Never waxworms as a staple.
Gut-Loading
Gut-load insects 24-48 hours before feeding with collard greens, dandelion greens, squash, sweet potato, and commercial gut-load products. A well-fed cricket is substantially more nutritious than an empty one.
Supplementation
Dust every feeding with calcium powder. With proper UVB: plain calcium most feedings, D3 twice a week. Without UVB: calcium with D3 at every feeding. Never feed wild-caught insects — they carry parasites and pesticides.
Feeding Schedule
Juveniles: daily. Sub-adults and adults: every 2-3 days. Always feed at night or in the evening when they're naturally active. Remove uneaten live feeders after each feeding.
