Female Mice: Social and Group-Friendly
Female mice are social animals that benefit from the company of other females. A lone female will be less active and not thriving. Two to four females from a young age is the classic beginner setup.
Introducing new females to an established group requires patience. Use a neutral territory introduction and supervise closely for the first few days.
Male Mice: Best Kept Solo
Male mice are territorial, and once they reach sexual maturity at around 5 to 6 weeks, that territoriality becomes serious. Males housed together will fight to serious injury or death. The standard recommendation is to house male mice alone.
Scent Differences
Male mice have a noticeably stronger, more musky odor than females — this is normal hormonal scent marking. If you are sensitive to animal odors, female mice are the more practical choice.
