Mice are small, fast, and primarily active at night. They are not lap animals, and most mice tolerate rather than seek out handling — though some become surprisingly tame with consistent gentle interaction. Lifespan is 1.5 to 3 years.
Female Groups vs. Solo Males
Female mice are social animals and do best in groups of two or more. A single female will be lonely. Two or three females kept together from a young age is the classic beginner setup.
Male mice are territorial and will fight viciously once sexually mature. Most male mice need to be housed alone.
Housing Basics
Mice need more space than most first-time owners expect. A 20-gallon tank is a workable minimum for a small group of females. Glass tanks with secure mesh lids are popular. Properly ventilated bin cages are another strong option.
Bedding Depth
Provide at least 4 to 6 inches of paper-based bedding. Deep bedding lets them dig and nest, which is natural, stress-relieving behavior.
